Balachandran M, an accomplished banking professional with a career spanning 37 years, has significantly contributed to the banking sector in India and abroad. With over 33 years of service at Bank of Baroda, he held various crucial positions, culminating as the Chief Executive for the bank’s American operations based in New York. Following his tenure at Bank of Baroda, he assumed leadership roles at Bank of India, ultimately retiring as its Chairman and Managing Director in 2007. His expertise is diversified, specializing in Agriculture and SME, Corporate and International Banking, and Human Resource Management. Notably, Mr. Muthusamy was instrumental in founding the Star Union Dai Ichi Life Insurance Co., a notable joint venture involving Bank of India, Union Bank, and Dai Ichi Life Insurance Co. of Japan, where he served as the founding Chairman for three years until 2011.

In addition to his executive roles, Mr. Muthusamy held key ex-officio positions, such as Chairman of BOI Shareholding Co. and Bank of Baroda (Guyana) Inc. (South America). He also served as a director on the boards of significant financial entities, including Indo Zambia Bank Ltd., Nabard Consultancy Services, Agricultural Finance Corporation Ltd., and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI). Mr. Balachandran's contributions extended to conceptualizing and establishing "Abhay," a credit counseling center sponsored by BOI, pioneering the provision of such services in the country. During his impactful tenure, BOI experienced notable growth in its overseas network, establishing branches in Beijing and upgrading branches in Schenzen, China, and Antwerp, Belgium. Furthermore, Mr. Muthusamy facilitated strategic acquisitions and expansions, including a majority stake acquisition in Bank Swadesi in Indonesia, and securing licenses for subsidiaries in Tanzania and South Africa.

Engaged in various governmental committees and advisory boards, Mr. Balachandran actively contributed to the financial landscape. He also showcased his thought leadership by participating as a speaker and panellist in numerous National and International seminars and conferences. Born in 1947, he holds a Post Graduate degree in Agricultural Sciences and is a Certified Associate (I) of the Indian Institute of Bankers.
